Robinson's Podcast #232 - Niall Ferguson: Trump v. Harris | Israel v. Hamas | Russia v. Ukraine

Sir Niall Ferguson is the Milbank Family Senior Fellow at the Hoover Institution, Stanford University, and a senior faculty fellow of the Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs at Harvard University, where he served for twelve years as the Laurence A. Tisch Professor of History. In this episode, Robinson and Niall discuss three of the biggest conflicts currently gripping the newsā€”the election in the United States and the two wars between Israel and Hamas on the one hand, and Russia and Ukraine on the other. Undergirding the entire discussion is the question of whether the United States is an empire, whether it is failing, and what the world needs America to be. Niall's most recent book is Doom: The Politics of Catastrophe (Penguin, 2021).

I believe it is a rather famous British historian who has suggested: 'Populism' is just a dirty word for 'democracy'.

I think we've suffered from the politics of 'elitism' for long enough, thank you very much. The state elitist agendas have left society in is not "particularly attractive" either.

You cannot compare tariffs from the 19th century to the 21st century.

In the 19th century tariffs was one of many necessary ways to fund the government since the personal income tax had not yet come into law. Today Trump speaks of using tariffs to persuade foreign governments to either move their manufacturing production to the US or to stop their own tariffs on imported goods from America. Hopefully in the not too distant future, American manufacturing will have a renaissance in the US.

It was also a time when another president came back after serving his 1st term that was interrupted due to an reelection loss after his 1st term. Then he served another term, coming back, after winning the next election 4 years later, just like Donald Trump recently did. This president also served 2 terms that were not consecutive. That was Grover Cleveland. He was the only president this happened to until Trump. This is a rarity among the 235-year history of presidents. That is also interesting. Why would it happen in this period of the late 19th century Guilded Age? Maybe because politics was a bit more of a sport in that time period than others. History rhymes often. However, Grover Cleveland, like most presidents between Abraham Lincoln and Teddy Rosevelt of the early 20th century, were all not memorable ones. Unlike Trump, they tended to be either weak, corrupt, or boring. There are some differences. But the general observations with that period are correct.

And everyone knows he stole "Bigly" from Elmo. Didn't even pay poor Elmo a royalty for the persistent usage. Poor Elmo. Bad Trumpy.

The polite, stodgy political discourse Americans are used to seeing in C-Span feeds is an aberration historically, and even today most governing bodies are far more dynamic and violent than we are used to. This is partly due to the average age of politicians, which is well past retirement age.

Tariffs were simply a symptom of what the true issue was in regards to the civil war. It was a fight for each state to retain their legal and financial autonomy. I totally agree with the fact that tariffs should not be imposed by any state in the union to any other state within our union. However, in order to reign in Chinaā€™s economic hold on the US, tariffs must be part of the solution. The United States should not fight against itself. The states should work together so that each one is can produce and sell freely within the US. It serves OUR interest. However, we should prioritize the financial health of the US over that of any other country we do business with. Thatā€™s not to say that a healthy international trade system isnā€™t beneficial, because it isā€¦. But we shouldnā€™t be making deals or allowing other countries to sell their products to or within the US at the cost of financial stability to the American Republic.
