As an Eagle Scout I felt genuine shock and disbelief when you said you’re not carrying a pocket knife

A knife is something that when you need it, there are few suitable substitutes and something difficult to make in an emergency. It’s worth the insurance if you know all the ways you can use one for emergency survival, fire making and first aid. It doesn’t need to be large and heavy. Even a razor blade is better than nothing.

These ultralight dudes are so awesome! I anxiously wait for them to dispense with themselves altogether from the trails and YT for ultimate weight savings!

Like other commenters, finding a better knife is a great idea rather than ditching it altogether

Eliminating stuff sacks is brilliant - saves, weight, energy and just feels life-changing! Tossing the knife is a mistake IMHO... I consider it an emergency repair item (not a weapon).

I would never compromise on not having a knife. Seems like common sense to me, you can get quality compact knives and they take up almost zero space.

I carry a fixed blade that can split wood in a pinch and definitely fend off a mountain lion, and it has a Ferro rod in the sheathe really I love it. It's fun to carve a stick while I watch the fire if I somehow have energy after the end of the night. 😅

a knife is EDC for me, there's no way I'm going into the Backcountry without one 😂

I don’t know. The closed cell pad is normally on the outside of the pack and it’s great for naps..or leaning back.
I was a marine and was always drilled the following. Sit when you and sit…lay down when you can lay down.

Like many others I thought you were crazy when you said you were leaving the pocket knife until I realised your replacing these items with others that could help you in the same way as each of these items!...

Not having a knife is a mind boggling "flex". Imagine explaining to your caveman ancestors what a steel knife is, then telling them you dont carry one outside of the cave.

I agree with everything you said, except the knife. I use mine all the time.

For me personally I usually just like to carry a multi tool or a Swiss Army knife instead of a small folding pocket knife because those have more uses and take up about the same amount of space and weight.

I’d say check out the gerber dime, basically a mini leatherman tool but only 2.2oz.

And the gossemer gear sit pad is nice is 5ft by 19inch, only 1/8inch thick so you can fold it to be a small 1ftx19inch sit pad, or have it open and lay on it. Only weighs 2.7oz. Way better than the thermarest pads.

agree with most but will never give up my ass pad. I put it on top of the pack secured with Y strap, it weighs nothing and makes taking breaks just so much more comfortable. I can lay out my gear on it when I'm in some nasty places to not get everything covered in grime and dirt

I used to do the 2 bottle filtering, but I just tried using a bag and never going back. A bag is so much faster and easier, and it takes up very little space and allows you to carry more water if needed.

also the knot you showed here has a high potential for abrading the guyline attachment point due to friction. especially if you're using spectra/dyneema cord, it can sew through the fabric of the attachment point in no time. double sheet bend knot immobilizes the rope so it's not going to abrade the fabric.

I keep a Thermarest self inflating ass pad in my pack. It rolls up smaller than the folding pads and is softer, so it can fit into a void in my pack rather than taking up needed space. It primarily goes in the footbox of my quilt to help keep my feet warmer in the cold (hammock hiker). During warmer weather it stays home.
