Try quansheng only like thirty bucks and do a hf mod, I don’t know if you can transmit on the hf bands but the uvk5 is very customizable with firmware mods. The uv5r is such a clean and sleek radio though

It all depends on your needs. Is price your main factor? Or is reliability?
Uv5r isn't waterproof or intrinsically safe.
If price is your main constraint, it has a farily decent cost-to-value ratio. But there have been some new entries to that market as well. Tidradio quansheng just to name a few.
There are a lot of accessories you can buy for it, but if price is your constraint, that seems counterintuitive.
For the price, it's great.... but there's better radios for sure.
