Isn’t that around the time swords started getting hidden in objects like canes?

A foreign visitor was to be brought before George III of England. When he was asked if he had a sword to wear, he answered in the negative, and they went straightaway to fetch him one, for it was not allowed to appear before the king without being armed with a sword.

Another circumvention of laws against wearing swords was to wear particularly long knives or daggers, like the Italian cinquedea which was five fingers wide at the guard and barely below the length of a short sword.

This is like in Florida where to open carry a firearm you have to be on your way or in the process of hunting, fishing, or camping.

"When it became socially unacceptable to wear a sword in public"

A truly sad time. I say bring them back.

A light-weight long sting that can kill at a snap by internal bleeding and looks like jewelry: civilian perfection for that age, if you ask me.

British laws will never cease to amaze me in their insanely ridiculous levels of restriction.

They should bring back licenses to carry court swords here in the States. It’ll give me an excuse to wear one of them ol wigs 😂

If you couldn’t afford one would a court-appointed sword be provided?

There was also the Spanish who just made their navaja knives much bigger to be comparable to a smaller sword.

The most funny circumvention of a similar law in my oppinion is the when the German nobility forbade commoners from owning swords, and they just made their knives as long as the swords. I'ts called Grosse Messer and translates to "BIG KNIFE" :D

Meanwhile, Future Trunks is walking around casually with a sword in its sheath.

I would prefer this kind of bling over gold teeth and gold chains. Like, it’s classy and you’re sporty.

For some reason I am reminded of Boswell's London Journal (1763, IIRC). He bought himself a sword so he'd look the proper gentleman, but was constantly putting it in and out of hock for about a pound at a time.
