You know... we have a similar problem here in germany with our extreme-right party and the moderate conservatives.
The conservatives tried copying the talking points of the far-right in hopes of skimming votes off the top - but the only thing they accomplished with that, was that all the racists, bigots and nazis looked at it, saw that their extreme views were being legitimized and started turning out for the far-right, because it suddenly became "en-vogue" to wear your racism on your sleeve again.
"People vote for the original" is a proverb that was often used here in that context, and it seems the Democrats have just found out what it means...
