I have both Sarah and Barrett assigned to my ship because both have high pilot ratings. 😃

Don't get new crew members unless you use them. Unassigned members have a tendency to disappear forever, typical Bethesda bug

Keep in mind though pretty much no crew skills apply to outposts. A crew member assigned to an outpost with level 4 outpost engineering won't apply to what you can research/build. You have to get the skill yourself.

This didnt explain if the effects take affect if youre by yourself.
Its clear that the ship related ones work when youre in your ship.
But does the gun related ones work when your out lonesome?

They also randomly disappear from the entire game. And I'm not talking about that one story quest. I mean two of my crew I hired are just gone. Into the void.

The randoms crew always have 1 star in a single skill.. makes them totally pointless when compared to the ones you get from the start of flying.

You also need skills on the skill tree to add them. If I remember right they’re both in the social tree.

Can you upgrade the skills that they come with? As in level them up?

Yeah the problem is you need a crazy amount of skill points in a the social tree to be able to actually increase crew members beyond the 3 you are given at the start. Then of course you need 4 skill points in that skill to get max members. Nobody wants 20 skills in social.
