Renunciants often practice aṣhṭāṅg-yog or haṭha-yog with strict asceticism, leading to detachment from the path of devotion, which involves meditating on God’s Names and Forms. SriKrishna describes how ascetics focus their gaze between the eyebrows to prevent distractions, balance their breath to reach a trance, and control their senses, mind, and intellect. This path seeks liberation from material energy and leads to ātma jñāna (self-knowledge) but not brahma jñāna (knowledge of God). Thus, the ascetic path is completed through devotion to God, as explained in the next verse.
