The Knights Templar Castle at Ponferrada, northern Spain. Built in 1178 by the King of Leon, Ferdinand II, the fortress would be used by the Poor Knights of Christ and of the Temple of Solomon, also known as the Knights Templar. They used the castle at Ponferrada to guard the pilgrims on their route to the tomb of St James in Santiago de Compostela. The Templar’s here also aided the Reconquista in an effort to reclaim the Iberian peninsula from the Moors and return it to Christian hands. After the fall of the Templar order in the 14th century, the castle of Ponferrada returned to the monarchy.
