I think he is a Mimic tear. When we hit him he changes into another form. He drops a larval tear, as do the other mimics.

There are other areas to encounter this extra hairy runebear. The earliest is out the other side of the Siofra wells, turning around instead of following the golem-archer path to the great jar, was my first encounter and it sure left an impression.
There are also the same modeled runebears in the area the sanguine invades in the snowfield.
