You could also say this about Doom though. Everyone called every FPS a "Doom clone" before Halo came out.
EDIT: Halo honestly was the shit when it came out. It blew my 8 year old mind that I could run around a giant island like Silent Cartographer. That and Oblivion really felt like major paradigm shifts in gaming.

While Call of Duty did release a couple years after Halo, it lifted it's design more from Medal of Honor if anything - med kits, linear levels, no drivable vehicles, on-rails sections, etc. Call of Duty didn't start copying Halo elements until the xbox360-ps3 era, and then Halo started copying Call of Duty after that.

This might be Vaush‘s weirdest take. I’ve played pretty much every shooter in the genre since the early 2000s. I can’t think of a single game that actually tried to copy halo. There may have been some flops or some indie games that tried but certainly nothing main stream. The big four shooters at this time were Halo, Battlefield, Gears of War, and Call of Duty. Those games were, and still are, fundamentally different designs. They never tried to go back on those designs to copy some other game. They may have taken inspiration from each other, but the core fundamental of the game never changed. The only thing Halo did was bring first person shooters to the main stream. Making the argument that “everything tried to copy halo” is just as weird of an argument as if I were to say that halo it’s just a Quake rip off.

Hey its my Donation! Halo CE is my childhood 😄😄.
To me halo CE's sandbox didn't feel redundant and the role of each enemy was perfect.
Elites were officers and shielded requiring ironically their own weapons against them
Grunts were weak but numerous and occasionally carried rockets and the ones who utilized the grenades the most.
Jackals were supportive with their phalanx like advance being bulwark for their allies. Just happy they did become snipers.
Hunters were minibosses and sadly were the outlier who can get game ended by a magnum round.
The flood were good addition, they were fast unpredictable and at times came back after being filled with lead. They were a game changer and changed the flow of the game into a chaotic battlefiel

Essentially every fps game after Halo CE has copied it's controls and most of its systems, like bullet magnetism, other aim assisting controls, two weapons separate melee, etc.
This isn't a bad thing though, I believe it's a great system and absolutely didn't ruin fps games since at the time it was flourishing.
It's definitely more "innovated" than "ruined".
It is sad to see some older games and mechanics not used as much like Doom.
If I were to say what "ruined" the fps genre, I would blame CoD much sooner than I would blame Halo
Many games more explicitly copied CoD afterwards and it definitely saturized the genre. It didn't help that the quality of CoD games started to decrease as it just became a product to pump out every year.
It even ruined Halo, at least for a bit, funnily and sadly enough. CoD copied at least some parts of Halo at first then later down the line Halo would copy CoD.

Halo defined the FPS console formula - a mix of regen health, two guns limits, slower gameplay, aim assist, and good controls. Of course games can diverge wildly within those basic commonalities, and Halo/COD do, but nonetheless they both exist in a completely different sub genre to DOOM etc. which is what I’d imagine Vaush is referring to

I pray to God that Chris Ray Gun makes a whole video thrashing on this take. I would love a non serious silly debate about it.
