Got my first bassoon (never played one, not even held one, but as an amateur saxophone and clarinet player I have wanted to try one for a long time), a quite old Soviet one in need of some work I got cheap on Ebay. There was one old reed in the case, not moldy but cracked and really dry. But as the reeds I have ordered have not arrived yet I decided to give it a try. After soaking in hydrogen peroxide and then water and adjusting the opening I even got some sounds out of it.

I’m a bassoon player, and when I begun I forgot to take my reed out of the water for like an hour while I practiced. So I took it out and thought, “no big deal!” But I was wrong… the next day the reed was black and I was horrified by what I had done… I am a survivor.

Cracked reeds, yep. But mold? No. Not once. Never. I remember my band director telling us a story about seeing a reed with mold. I damn near threw up.
