Iā€™m very appreciative of you covering this. For one reason, I am a Coast Guard veteran and proud of the service history. The second reason is I am very aware of this incident with the USCGC Icarus. The cutter transported the prisoners to the Naval Base in Charleston, my hometown. While there are many small details not included due to time constraints for a short, one other significant thing is the German crew were also the 1st foreign POWs on US soil since the War of 1812!

People like to give the Coast Guard shit. But they perform vital missions in every American war. Often punching above their weight class.

The Royal Navy warned the US Navy that they would have to introduce a convoy system, but the USN ignored them. After dozens of ships were sunk the USN grudgingly agreed that the RN was right!

My mother was stranded with her family in Panama during the war, my grandfather was a crane operator on the canal. They didnā€™t get back home until ā€˜46. My mother, who was ten at the time, sang for the USO and entertained troops. She said she had terrible stage fright, but did her bit.

My father was in one of the US vessels making dangerous runs up and down the east coast, from Maine to North Carolina. Truth is - and this is one of the core truths about war that gets ignored in mainstream histories - he was also abused by his crew mates.
The combined aggression by two nationsā€™ forces landed Dad in a hospital with battle neurosis.
He went on to a successful life in professional terms, but the never widely discussed details of his war experiences caused permanent problems. War is not cool, and we should commend as heroes those who prevent war.

The US also established U Boat tracking mechanisms using buoys and other means. My neighbor lady who passed during Covid in her 90s worked in a monitoring unit on the outer banks which was top secret. She had to tell her parents she was a typist. The methods and program was not declassified until the mid 1990s...

Please talk about World History and Nationalism and how our Great Generation gave their lives for us to be free from the Nazis. Freedom that we're losing today!

The Coast guard are The unsung hero. When I was a kid I thought about it. They see a lot of action.
