I'm not in circles of money or certain culture. I always thought the ask was the gift, because only your closest get asked. I also would only have so many people to ask. The weddings I've been near were small and maids mostly helped bride get ready, family still dud most of the wedding prep.

I was a junior bridesmaid in my sister’s wedding and as a proposal gift she got me a squishmallow, $10 Starbucks gift card, and a sprite. 😅 but I’m still so grateful she wanted me to be a part of her wedding and I had an amazing time! I love my sister
