I chuckle when I hear his name, since it reminds me that there was a friendly, kind local man in this town named Soapy Smith that owned a plant nursery. He was very knowledgeable about plants and plant care, so people sought him out for advice. I never heard where he got his nickname. But, this town had a few people with interesting names, including a coach whose actual given name was Soda Popp! š

I used to live in Skagway, Alaska where he was shot and killed. The events leading up to his death and his shenanigans/cons there are really entertaining. Like he used to run a telegraph where the line went i to the ocean and ended. No messages were sent but he charged to send messages. You can now tour the bar he ran.

Visited the cemetery. When it was officially made the Skagway Cemetery, the boundary was moved 3 feet, so that Soapy's grave would be outside of it. Incidentally, people were buried there, standing up, for lack of space.
