This is actually a remake of a French movie ("Le Jouet" by Jacques Veber in 1976) but in the original movie the character of Richard Pryor is in fact a white guy, a newly hired journalist that happened to be in the shop when the kid picks him as his toy. It is a social satire about this awful boss who is treating all his employees like garbage (he fires someone just because he has sweaty hands for example). There is no racism involved at all in the original movie and Hollywood chose this movie and turned it into this...

I'm older and mixed race. My black mom took me to see this as a kid. She loved Richard Pryor. WE all did. But I remember as the movie went just sitting in silence while people around us laughed like the racism was hilarious. We were seething. We were sad for Richard Pryor for a lot of reasons but mostly because people like us WERE the joke.

I am glad this movie is around. It introduced racism to a kid, me. And it got a conversation going between my mom and i. She was born in the 50s and had to hide in the trunk of her african american parents car to cross through a certain part of town so their family wouldnt be threatened or harmed. She had to deal with so much racism back in the day. And because of that movie then my convo with my mom i became a fighter against racism in my own way.
