Anything to avoid the obvious. They all had handlebar moustaches back then, they couldn’t see with those things flapping around like that! Pennyfarthings we’re not easy to drive! My favourite part of this is that the bike lanes, as far as I experience them these days, are heavily used by delivery vehicles bringing food and other things right to Torontonians’ doors, lickety split. I thought Cons are supposed to be all about infrastructure that benefits commerce. Maybe they don’t go downtown much.

Helmets aren't even designed to protect you while being hit by a car. They are only designed to protect you in certain types of falls. There have also been studies that show that drivers are more likely use less caution around people wearing bike helmets than those who are not. Bike helmets can help in some instances, but they certainly do not provide the type of safety that many think they do.

As someone else mentioned, people in the Netherlands don't wear helmets. They have proper bicycle infrastructure, fewer cars, and the people who do drive also ride bikes so they know how to behave around cyclists. They also mostly ride upright bikes at a manageable pace so the chance of being hit by a car or getting into any kind of serious accident is extremely low. Everyone there rides bikes regularly, including children and the elderly, and they don't wear helmets, yet they have fewer fatalities. Hmmmm.
We think we need them in North America because everyone drives and cyclists are nuisances. Drivers here are so irresponsible (Not entirely their fault. When everything is built for cars, everyone has to drive, including those who shouldn't or don't want to) and infrastructure is so poorly designed, that drivers can't even avoid hitting each other, so what chance does someone walking or cycling have?
Obviously, if you're riding for sport or riding dangerously, then you should wear a helmet. But you shouldn't need one for a regular commute because the environment should be designed in a way that's safe for riders.
