People back then weren't dumb they were able to figure out when things don't work. Blood letting is still around today in some sense. It's not entirely ineffective we just consider it extremely impractical and very unsafe in comparison. The "yellow bile" presented in the short also makes sense. If you're feeling bad in your stomach, the doctor thinks you have too much yellow bile, so he prescribes things that calm down nausea, pain, etc in the stomach and thus bringing back your yellow bile to normal levels. This makes sense when you keep in mind they had no conception of germs and germ theory.
