I'm a full-time PhD student on the civilian side, and a part-time Black Hawk pilot in the National Guard.
A lot of nonsense gets spewed by recruiters and detractors alike, but the truth is the National Guard can be a massive money maker if you take advantage of the opportunities available to you. Just like I did, you can choose any job you want, boring or exciting, and the National Guard will send you to training and pay you a salary. After training, you can work anywhere between 1 weekend a month to full time doing your National Guard job.
In my state (Michigan), National Guard income is tax free (a portion of it is federally taxed), and they gave me a scholarship for my Bachelor's degree. I currently get $4,000/year in federal funding and $6,000/year in state funding for just about any certification I want (I previously got my ACE Certified Personal Trainer cert and am now doing my CompTIA A+ certs).
Throw in retirement, VetTix, Armed Forces Vacation Cub, free airline baggage, AMEX Platinum fee waiver (when full time), and 10% off at O'rielly Auto Parts, and the National Guard can give you a major financial boost in life.
But what's the catch? Coming in once in a while with your best friends and serving your community.
