This segment is from Chicago Med, Season 3, Episode 7.
The newborn was diagnosed with neonatal abstinence syndrome and was in critical condition. The doctor sought out his dazed mother for help, explaining that her touch could comfort him, making him feel safe and possibly easing his symptoms. At first, the mother was hesitant, but when she learned her baby might not survive, she agreed to hold him. The story ends on a heartwarming note.

Chicago Med, Season 3,Its unique fast-paced plot and exploration of human nature deeply moved me. I’ll be updating regularly, and I hope everyone enjoys it!

Addiction needs to be treated as the disease it is.

I think in this situacion.
When the addicted mother holds the baby she realize what is important and she would do anything to keep the baby. And i think that is beautifull. Parents love is so strong it can winstand anything. 😊

The little gentle croaks of the baby when he gets into her arms sloths my heart
My son was born with down syndrome, and this was the only way he would fall asleep and stop crying
He's now 5 months and now I can't sleep without him and my fiance

Skin on skin contact between the mother or any trusted adult and baby is highly essential for a baby's health, especially in situations like this. My sister and I were preemies, but my situation was dire due to the nuchal cord around my neck, and the fact I wasn't crying during birth and wasn't taking in any food. Mom held me every day during my NICU stay as well as bathed me and fed me when she could, and the nurses were so grateful and amazed that they wanted to give their paychecks to her.

This is actually what happened to me as a baby. I had heroin withdrawals. My mother was in active addiction all my life and before I was born for years. She is hopefully doing better now. I haven't spoken to her in a while though.

This is so, so so not acurate. They would have done a blood and urine screen for drugs for the mother, and they would have tested babies blood and meconium for drugs as well. That baby would be getting Finnagen scores every two hours and held, fed, and rocked and the NURSES would be doing all the care, and depending on the scores the baby may get sent to NICU or PICU for IV morphin or methasone, and no doctor would be spending that much time with one patient, and social services would be called with possible foster placement, and the mother would be NO WHERE near the baby if immediate danget was present after a social service consult.
Also mothers who are recovering addicts and getting clean often take methadone or suboxine, and the withdrawls from those on baby are far worse then heroin or cocaine.

I hope any moms addicted get treatment right away as treatment and being monitored by doctors do babies rarley get withdrawals! Please get help for the baby if not for yourself! Trust me, any pediatric doctor would rather have a baby being treated with methadone and suboxone than the actual drugs. So for the people saying getting treatment is worse off for the baby your giving moms the wrong information!

Not being held by the woman who used drugs while she was pregnant and didn't care about him would probably best. She doesn't have magical arms and is going through withdrawals so his crying could put him in actual physical danger.

Don't get me wrong here, physical touch and skin to skin contact is VERY VERY important. So get a nurse to either take off their shirt or get them into a tank top and have THEM hold him. Then get him to a good family with people who will actually care about him.
