That was none other than Brian Shul. He passed away 2 yrs ago. I knew him. He told me this speed check story.
The most impressive thing about Brian was that he was burnt on almost 90% of his body from a plane crash he survived. He spent a few years in the hospital but he was determined to stay in the Air Force so he underwent the sheer Hell of forcing his body thru an overly extensive and painful course of rehab. Working to ensure the keloid scaring doesn't reduce his flexibility or strength.
He did this way before his days as an SR71 pilot.
I met him at the Gym back in the late 80's and have to admit I was shocked as the first time I saw him were both in the locker room. The man was nothing but scar tissue and muscle.
Brian was hard to pin down.. award winning wildlife photographer, plane crash survivor, SR 71 pilot, Author, active community member and my friend. Rest in peace Brian.

My favorite fact about the SR-71 is that while flying it gets so hot that it grows a foot in length

I was leaving Willow springs raceway back in the mid 90's and after getting on the 14 south freeway from Rosamond Blvd (tha same exit as Edwards AFB, we heard the sound of something flying above us that I had never heard before- we pulled over, got out and there was an SR71 climbing out maybe 1,000 feet above us- just as we looked up, he hit the afterburners and I'd never seen anything accelerate that quickly in my entire life - I'm so friggin LUCKY that I actually got to witness thst thing in person-

Was obsessed with the blackbird when I was a kid. Coolest looking plane ever. Still have a few models of it in boxes of my old stuff. Man what a cool plane

It was a cessna at 90 knots, an f18 at 600 knots, and an sr71 at 80000 feet at 2000 knots (those are approximate but really close)

The whole story is even better, because it’s a two man crew and the one not on the radio wanted to do it, but it wouldn’t be right for crew management/relations…then the guy on the radio actually made the exact call the other wanted. Amazing story.

Fun fact: while the SR-71 is the fasted JET powered plane achieving a speed of Mach 3.3, the fasted manned plane in general was the North American X-15 which was powered by a rocket engine and achieved hypersonic flight at a speed of Mach 6.72 (4,520 miles per hour or 7,274 kilometers per hour)

The SR-71 was beautiful when I first fell in love with it as a kid… Even today with all the new tech, it’s still the most beautiful thing to have ever flown… 🇺🇸

Another really cool story about the Skunk works Blackbird is that the inventor, Kelly Johnson based the shape of the plane on a UFO he saw as a child.
