The demonic story behind King Crimson's "In the Court of the Crimson King" might surprise you.

According to the band's lyricist, Peter Sinfield, the song was born from a menacing dream he once had. In the dream, a young man was seduced by the devil with promises of power and wealth. However, he soon discovered the devil's deceit.

Sinfield used this dream to create the lyrics for the song, which even references the devil's court. & In Christian mythology, the devil is depicted as a king, and his court is a place of temptation and sin.

In the Court of the Crimson King (subtitled An Observation by King Crimson) is the debut studio album by English rock band King Crimson, released on 10 October 1969 by Island Records. The album is one of the earliest and most influential of the progressive rock genre, where the band combined the musical influences that rock music was founded upon with elements of jazz, classical, and symphonic music.

I’m so glad this album and many others came back into the spotlight! Such a good album with good meanings. These lyrics don’t have to be the straight forward meaning. It can align with any predicament and help you get out. It starts w admiring the talent and how each instrument is played.

Deep.

Do you have a reference to where peter sinfield ACTUALLY said all of this? I have never heard this in any king crimson interviews, and i would think king crimson would let the backstory be known considering this is one of their most popular songs and albums

Whoah. I had a similar dream when lucifer fell and I went on a pilgrimage to where he fell. No wonder this album hits different.

I like how they don’t just describe him as “rahhh scary demon” but also more biblical like a liar, evil, deceitful etc. but idk why he’d be a king but as long as they don’t glorify the devil I’m gonna always love King Crimson, def top 3 band oat for me

The Devil is not a king in Christianity. He’s called a prince a lot, but he doesn’t rule Hell, he rules the Earth.

Interesting. I never thought of the devil when I heard this song before. Beyond ancient king sure, but not devil.
