Over the past 48 hours, Southwest Airlines has cancelled 5,600 flights, account for roughly 70% of their daily schedule. This trouble was brought on my a major storm, but has persisted for other reasons specific to the airline. So why, exactly, is Southwest melting down, and when will things return to normal? #shorts

Fact is… CEO Herb Kelleher was an operations guy. He was replaced with people from the accounting side, more concerned with stock performance than funding the necessary people scheduling infrastructure. The current CEO only took over in February, and though he committed to upgrade the necessary scheduling and dispatch IT, that takes years, not months. The storms contributed to the meltdown, but cockpit and cabin crew couldn’t communicate with scheduling, so flights were canceled even with pilots, flight attendants and aircraft ready to go.

Solid content. The short format is good for this kind of information.

Had a southwest flight the other day that was on time by some miracle. Feel bad for everyone who’s getting swept up in the chaos

I read an "anonymous account by a Southwest Airlines pilot" that looked pretty convincing. They said the outdated computer system SWA uses was totally overwhelmed at trying to match planes, pilots, flight attendants, airports, passengers, luggage, food, fuel, and flight schedules. The system can only seem to handle one third of the computing challenge leaving resources and passengers stranded everywhere. They basically gave up , "rebooted", but it's taking a long time to work through the backlog with their aged computer system. Flight crews calling to get planes to fly find themselves on 10 plus hour hold times. It's a giant $+lt sandwich and everyone has to take a bite . My family gave up and drove to see grandma for the holidays. Will get the SWA refund later.

It's also their nineties style scheduling software.

Yikes! 😬 but that’s interesting to hear and hopefully they fix their issues soon… Although some of their issues are induced by their own operating model…

The additional issue here is that their "antiquated" crew scheduling system was not able to properly coordinate pilots and flight attendants to operate flights. SWA has a streamlined fleet and consistent schedule, so theoretically they should have been in better shape to pick up and recover. Also note that the mainline carriers don't operate as much hub-and-spoke as they did in the past (especially when flight controllers have much more ability to reposition planes and crews on the fly), so the SWA point-to-point model is a bit of a red herring.

Great video. The information is so much more logical and believable than a lot of the wild speculation I've heard in the media.

Long time Southwest customer. I used to be able to fly non-stop from my home city of PHL to places like FLL and LAS. Now, they have zero direct flights to LAS and 1 N/S flights to FLL during Peak seasons.

I follow the southwest reddit and some are saying it's because they're tired of the new leadership, that it's turned 180° since Herb

I’m currently in a 121 training and a few of my classmates have friends in southwest and I promise you this cancellations has nothing to do with the weather, that just what they have to say to save face.

I heard that management in denver got upset that ground crew callouts were always high so they put a new policy in place requiring a doctors note if you call out, resulting in most of them quitting on the spot (expecially when the storms came), leading to all the flights getting canceled. then ontop of that their schedualing program was made in the 90s and couldnt handle all the changes.

Hope they get their act together, otherwise hope they go out or buissness… Suprised the FAA hasnt said anything about this to my knowledge.

Just in Buffalo, NY alone, the storm had over 20 confirmed deaths. My condolences to all of the families who list a loved one on Christmas.

They left the pilots stranded and they had no idea where they were at.

how they don't have a computer program that can automatically recalculate what flights CAN be made with what is available
(maybe you might need Ai)
but I'm pretty sure just a regular old computer program can figure out what's available and then book those flights accordingly or at least try to follow the schedule as closely as possible.. they need MANY contingency plans ..like shells of contingency plans!!

Good job. I think point to point is the problem. I was stuck in Seattle myself, but it was due to SeaTac was shut down for w while, and I was flying Alaska. Lots of crew didn’t show. It took a few days for for recover too. No show crews were a problems already as I got stuck in Seattle couple times already I. Portland and Seattle just before the Holidays.
