The way this little girl looks so innocently at herself in the mirror. We all need someone to tell us that its fine to grow at our pace. Comparison only leads to disappointment. 😭

In art school, many of the teachers laughed at Norman Rockwell. To me he was a genius!!! People must’ve been jealous of his talent, because his work was exceptional and unmatched.

So relevant today! So many young people feel they have to grow up so fast instead of embracing every moment of their youth. This portrait portrays that so much

I'm a man, always been closed off, come off as gruff and harsh and always thought I was.
This channel made me feel more empathetic.
There's more to it all, the human beings, and they're journeys.
It's beautiful.
Thank you.

my grandmother had a print of this that i discovered at about the same age the girl in the painting is. the way the girl clearly sees herself as not good enough struck me. her expression to me seems to be of longing and dismay, giving puppy dog eyes to the mirror, begging her reflection to be prettier and fate to be kinder. at such a young age she is already realizing what society values about women, that the most important thing is for her to be beautiful. she is already thinking about makeup, she has clearly done her hair as well in a childlike way, unable to see the back. she knows the role that is imposed on her and wants to fulfill it, wants to be valuable. i still think about this painting a lot. it’s very relevant today with the “sephora kids” and the way every little girl feels like she needs to grow up and be a sexual object as fast as she can. i remember realizing that i was fat and ugly (by society’s standards) in 2nd grade and that’s why my peers treated me poorly. it never stopped.

This hit. I’ve got an 8yr old girl who is in such a rush to grow up it kills me lol. I keep telling her being a big girl is really really hard, and she’s got her whole life to be a big girl.

We may still age yet in my head I'm 17 forever. I don't understand what's happening to my beautiful body. It's taking a lot of self reflection to realize these marks and scars have stories. I'm still unsure but it is inevitable and I think embracing it is the best way. Dont fight it.

Tragic how splendidly unique we are embraced as children, only to try to force ourselves into the same exact clothes/makeup to fit as adults. I wish she had sketched a portrait of her doll and self in lipstick across that mirror. Stunning, thank you Ms. Mae ✨

I met the girl, Mary Leonard, the Norman Rockwell model. She worked at the Normal Rockwell Museum Gift shop in Stockbridge, MA. Very sweet.

Going through the first changes of puberty is incredibly stressful. I remember that feeling of insecurity where the body changes but you feel you're not ready to grow yet.

Rockwell's art is simple and approachable, very human. He's the painter that captured Americana.

I keep my pre-teens off social media for this very reason. They need to let go of childhood naturally, not feel like they need to grow up because other girls their age at 20 when they are 10.

If only we understood when our parents begged us not to grow up, they always said "there's plenty of time for that, enjoy being a kid while you can". Then you grow up and understand every word they said.

This is how I felt much much too young. Is it really time now ? I barely got to be a kid. Childhood is precious and I’m gonna make sure my kids soak up every second 🥰

this painting made me cry....this is so relatable and I wished I can go back time and really enjoyed my childhood years but growing in a household under Asian Tiger parents, the pressure was so much. I'm 32 and I wish sometimes I can go back time and enjoy my younger years.
