How were the boards joined before adding those? They were clearly together when you drilled the holes.

That's clever. IIWMI'D make a thinner metal drilling template for drilling the butt joints w/maybe 6 or so 8-dowel holes at desired spacing to make that drilling faster & more precise. Otherwise brilliant!
