Eating organic-based products has bloomed in the past decade with grocery stores dedicating aisles exclusively catering to this demand. Along with that, there has been a popular list of foods called āThe Dirty Dozenā that is released annually by the Environmental Working Group (EWG). This list is based on the Pesticide Data Program (PDP) from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). The PDP has consistently shown through over 10,000 imported and domestic food samples that residues are well below the established tolerances (we are talking parts per billion). The EWG processes this PDP data and regurgitates a list of the top foods to avoid based on the number of pesticide residues it contains. This number does not account for the chemical type, its concentration nor its specified tolerance levels. For example, based on the Dirty Dozen list, it would take approximately 309 daily servings of conventional spinach for a child to reach the top of the No Adverse Effects Level for spinach.
Donāt let the label keep you from choosing whole plant foods. All foods have value and we have a very safe food system. Choose foods based on their freshness, taste and affordability rather than its labels and Dirty Dozen list.
