All animals in our care receive voluntary training. This can help them to get comfortable with their care team and can help prepare them for different procedures such as getting weighed or receiving an injection. As a reward for participating, animals receive special snacks, fostering their willingness to engage in training enrichment.
Last week, Animal Care Supervisor, Jax, and Animal Care Technician, Sarah, initiated target training with our female North American river otters. They offered yummy lake smelt and jackpot herring as high-value rewards if the otters touched their noses to the red ball on the target stick. 🐟 The otters were curious, but only for a moment! 😂 Training is voluntary, and sometimes an animal just isn’t interested, and that’s okay! Ensuring our animals feel safe and allowing freedom of choice is an essential part of providing exemplary care. 🥰
