If I use a loop lanyard I don't put it around my wrist. It will swing to your leg.
I hook my lanyard around my thumb and back around the outer side of my palm. It will swing sideways.

First thing you learn in any "hitting" activity is that your power comes from anywhere but your wrist, youre adding speed sure but no power

Use an axe… use a knife for finer bushcrafting tasks.

NEVER wrap anything around the wrist! Make the loop just big enough to slip under the thumb ,and over the back of the hand. This locks the grip to the hand, preventing forward slips and controls the butt of the grip. If and when you must drop/releasr the grip, just open the hand and the object comes away.
Learned in a baton/nightstick class and found it worked real well with blades; everything from hunting/flaying knives to large machetes
