Exarch shouldn't be on this list. It was a combo piece, not a staple, and its combo didn't fall off, it got hit with a ban. Cards like cryptic command and snapcaster mage should be on the list.

The fall of Goyf is indirectly the signal of the fall of my interest in MtG product and game design. It could be part of a beat down strategy or as a "4 turn clock" and the only attacking threat in Blue/green and everything in between. When power and complexity creep made it useless, the game changed far too much from the one I fell in love with from 2005-2019. It is NOT the only reason, but a microcosm of my view on the game.

Lingering souls used to be a staple of the format, because it gave you up to 4 blockers. Particularly good agains one toughtness creatures (that now also fell in use for orchist bowmaster)

I used to be a Johnny tournament player, highly invested in multiple Modern decks since its inception. I stopped playing Modern after MH1 came out, as I didnât like how the meta shifted, and it just wasnât the same format as it once was when Opal Affinity, Lili Jund, and Karn Tron were dominating. Iâve since downgraded all my Modern decks into âThrowback Standardâ decks, and I now only casually play that format almost exclusively, and itâs the most fun Iâve had playing Magic since I started playing in junior high when 8th/Mirrodin/Darksteel were a thing.

Quick note about Tarmogoyf: Iâm aware that it wasnât printed for Modern Masters. I was trying to make the point that it was the chase mythic and face card of that series. Same could be said for Etched Champion being the key art for MM 2015. These are cards that once represented what Modern was, but theyâre all shells of their former selves.
