Historic Camp Beale Springs - Kingman, Arizona

Kingman Arizona was founded in 1882 in Arizona Territory and is named after Lewis Kingman, a Civil engineer for the Atlantic and Pacific Railroad. In 1880 he surveyed and built the railway line from Flagstaff, Arizona through Beale Springs to Needles, California.
The spring is named after Lieutenant Edward Beale, a U.S. Navy officer in the service of the Army Corps of Topographical Engineers. Beale traveled through present-day Kingman in 1857 surveying the road and in 1859 to build the road. Beale's Wagon Road became part of Historic U.S. Route 66 and later Interstate 40.
In 1865, William Hardy created a stop at Beale Spring on his toll road from Prescott to Hardyville (now Bullhead City).
During the Hualapai War of 1866-1870, Captain Samuel Young of Fort Mojave established a temporary Army outpost at the spring in March of 1867.
The Beale Springs Indian Agency was established in January 1873 at the Camp as a reservation and supply distribution site for the Hualapai Nation. The camp at Beale Springs was closed in April of 1874, when the Hualapai were moved from the reservation and forced to march the La Paz Trail of Tears to Camp La Paz.
