I don't know if open world would work for Resident Evil. They've always been story focused survival horror puzzle games essentially. The aesthetic and horror tension relies on cramped dimly lit hallways, tightly designed puzzles, and scripted events. An open world game would probably make it much more action and adventure focused than RE fans would like. I suppose there could be an open world to travel with random horror encounters, with tightly designed dungeon style locations to explore. I suppose its possible, but you don't want to force a concept into an open world format unless it really makes sense. Most open world games are empty voids with little dots of interesting things. Even if it could work, you'd have to really convince me it's better for the series than a linear experience. Not all concepts can be applied to that game type.

If done well, i feel like it would be a horror themed metro type game, which i see as an absolute win
