There are advantages to founding your own religion: namely, you get the beliefs that you want instead of relying on the AI.
But regardless of whether you found a religion, I wouldn't recommend being passive about religious spread. If you can, for every religion in the game, get at least one city that follows it and build a holy site and shrine so that you can build missionaries. That way, it's a lot easier to make sure you have at least one follower in every city.
Trade routes are helpful here as they can help you convert a low population city to the religion of your choosing.
Or you can conquer your religious neighbours' cities. That also works

Now this sounds like an epic way to play.
Getting a bunch of religious npcs just to have them convert your cities and making you more powerful by proxi sounds like great fun
