Yep, it used to be 100 square miles which is the same as 10 square miles. It's now 68.30 give or take. Most people think that it's still 10 square miles, not realizing that's the old mileage for the original borders. This eould be a pretty big city if the VA portion was still part of D.C.. That would be Alexandria, Arlington, Rosslyn, and a lot of Fairfax County all the way to West Falls Church, which is where the West diamond tip originally ended! A lot of the boundry stones are still on the VA side, but since there was no road that made the western border within the portions that bordered VA, those stones are predominately in people's backyards, etc. Only on the portions that borders MD, are there roads that makes up the border. Most of those boundary stones are still in place as well. If there were roads that made up the border line with VA, the northwestern border would have had to be Northern ave including what is presently Western ave., which borders MD, and the Southwestern border would have had to be Western ave. I never understood why they named that northwest border with MD, Western ave. Its never made any sense. It's nothing surprising, though. A lot doesn't make any sense in this city!

this is also why people in 'Northern Virginia' say they're from DC instead of Virginia. Don't want to associate with the southerners.
