Oh man, I'm from poland, this topic is crazy. It is popular and people play it especialy during weddings, or in more "rural" clubs. It's very simple music, famous for heavy usage of electric piano. The lyrics for the most part are about sex, love and partying, but they are embarasingly simple and naive, to the point for great amount of people it's pure cringe. Many times you can hear someone say "i listen to every music, except disco polo" with sometimes added disclaimer about how they can, or can't have fun dancing to it while drunk. And many people do not consider it actuall music (most can't sing, it's so simple it's embarrasing, lyrics are cringy and sound like they were written by 7 year old).
But the really funny part is that some people prouldy say they listen to it, while for some the idea someone is playing these songs on their own violition is a huge embarrasment and a sign of being really simple minded. I think nowadays more and more people just don't care if someone is listening to it, but whenever it reaches mainstream there are discussions about how dumb it is. Personally i can't stand it regardless of occassions because i can't handle the crazy amout of cringe, and i just don't enjoy any of it. I still think it's not that bad because there is pure joy in these songs, which makes them honest in a way, but i'll be lying i won't think a bit lesser about someone who really listens to it.

I’m Polish American and in my experience, Disco Polo (in the US) is played at most Polish events like weddings, baptisms, etc. Some people in Poland believe it’s “inferior” music and will act like they don’t listen to it. This is especially true if people come from a higher class or have more money. People from lower classes either enjoy Disco Polo or pretend they don’t, but everyone will hear it at events. Disco Polo emerged at a time when Poland was still overcoming communism and the country had fewer resources for musicians, but electronic music was more readily available (let’s say you have a synthesizer and your best friend Staś who can sing, that’s all you need for some music). Disco polo is a unifying kind of music and it reminds me of being a kid in the 1990s. Those were definitely good times.
