Irrelevant if he's right or left handed, the drop must take place at the nearest point of relief. So as a left handed golfer he would have to drop further in to the 'cabbage' as that would be the nearest point of total relief from the path??

The rules are the rules Dave, it has nothing to do with execution level. It’s all about intention.

"Skill set" isn't in the rules. Just because a better player can play the shot better than you, doesn't prevent you from trying to play that shot. Rule 16.1a(3) actually states that "When interference exists only because a player chooses a club, type of stance or swing or direction of play that is clearly unreasonable under the circumstances", you don't get relief. So in this case, it Mr Barlow has admitted that he is only considering playing a shot to get relief, so it's a "no". There is no reason why you would want to play that shot left handed than right handed, if the path wasn't there.
The other problem would be that any free drop (for a left hander) would put the ball further into the rough and rocks, as that would be the NPCR.
