It gets pretty cold in America, too! 🥶

It's way colder in the US we just have very good insulation so heating in winter and cooling in summer isn't too expensive.

I’m jealous of British homes. They have charm and character. Is you want an old house here in the US, there are some things to consider: old houses are few and far between in some cities (like where I live), they’re very expensive if they’ve been maintained at all, and they’re still nowhere near as old or as charming as the quaint old houses in England. I’ve never been there, but I watch a lot of British television shows, like Doc Martin. Oh, how I want to visit Cornwall!

I'm so happy that although they've immersed themselves completely into our culture, they still have their accents. Best of both worlds! :) <3

it's not the heating, it's the fact that older structures were easy to build with interior walls helping support the roof. "open plan" requires the roof to support itself, which we do with high tech truss systems.

Except one thing I hate about here is how often we will tear down perfectly good old houses and buildings that just need some love and replace with a new building that isn’t built as well nor has the character/beauty.

Unpopular American opinion: I do not like open plans unless it's for an apartment - the smaller the space then the more open (no pun intended) to an open plan I am. For a house, nope nope. I grew up in a semi-open plan layout where you could smell and hear everything that's going on in the kitchen. The living/front room and basement were all connected to the kitchen.

It sucked when getting a glass of ice cold water in the middle of the night then waking up the dad who fell asleep in the basement. It annoyed the heck out of me when I was watching something in the living room but there was clatter in the kitchen.

The Open floor plan can be overrated.

You should check out some of the older houses. Ex. Victorian houses or Pioneer houses (like mine).

It's so cute they think America has big houses. The UK has castles. Yes some of the older homes in America are big and some even have charm but compared to castles built hundreds of years ago you got us beat.

I personally don't like open floor plan homes. I like my kitchen to be separate from the living room. Luckily my house is not an open floor plan. My house is 72 years old, and as big as the average British house, but only 1 floor. I just wished my kitchen were bigger, as my house gas a tiny kitchen, and no dining room. I wish my furnace, and water heater were in a closet, and the washer and dryer were in another closet within the kitchen, and had a bigger kitchen.

Open plan is not all that its cracked up to be. If your dishes are dirty the whole house looks nasty lol

Real houses in the US don't look like the ones you see on TV. They're normal homes with rooms and walls.
