This is one way that Indians serve others after they die. Would you like to do something similar?

Building water filters or wells after death reflects a deep cultural value of communal welfare and generosity. Often rooted in concepts like "seva" or selfless service, families fund these projects to ensure future generations have access to clean water, seeing it as a virtuous act that benefits society and earns merit or blessings for the deceased.

This tradition underscores the fundamental importance of clean water as a basic human need while honouring the legacy of those who contribute to their communities even beyond their lifetimes.

Sorry for the deep question at the end! I think providing drinking water to the community is a wonderful way to be remembered. What other ways do people leave lasting impacts?

in traditional south Indian houses, vwe keep pots of drinking water near the doorstep for any passerby to drink..
it's part of hospitality to offer drinking water to visitors even before they have stated the reason for their visit.
in summer 'pandals' offering free water and buttermilk are set up by individuals, political parties and temples
offering water and food to the needy is considered the highest form of charity in Indian culture

It's awesome and comforting to see readily available filtered water, right on the streets of India! Wish I'd had that when I lived in Kolkata in the 90s 😃

Did you know you can walk up to any house in India and ask for water too? I hadn't experienced that until I came to Bharat. It's especially common in summer.

Water fountains, or matkas मटके, might not even be there for a deceased relative, many people do it selflessly.

Bosnians do it aswell. My landlord in Australia sent money to family to make a water fountain in sandstone with a granite plaque remembering Anka

Water filtration is needed all over the world. A lot of underdeveloped parts of any nation globally need a water filtration system.

This is our heritage, tracing back to the Harappan common homes, almost all the Harappan homes had a separate room along the street with a well for a passerby to drink water from.
