As a medical student in 1880, my great grandfather was suspected of stealing fresh bodies to sell to other students at their Virginia medical school. Students were expected to supply a body for their anatomy courses.
Apparently there was quite an underground trade in corpses. Not being able to dig up any other ideas to pay tuition, g’granddad became a bone-afide entrepreneur.
When his activities were uncovered, the family put him on a train that took him as far as the tracks would go, which was Ft Worth, Texas. Later in life he actually became a professor of surgery at the local medical college. An alcohol addiction finally put him in the earth.
