J.P. Morgan died on March 31, 1913. He was an influential American businessman and financier. He orchestrated a number corporate mergers, including those that formed GE and US Steel Corporation. He was a philanthropist and spent millions on art, and his legacy lives on through his collection.
But what does he have to do with rioting?
On the very same day that J.P. Morgan died, over in Austria, the Skandalkonzert happened at the Musikverein in Vienna. The concert featured works by modernist composers which were experimental and radical at the time and this provoked a violent reaction among concertgoers. The musicians could not complete the concert due to the disruptions.
