That grey stuff is zinc I think. Generally added to oil when the engine is fresh built to help develop wear patterns on the cam lobes, lifters and rockers as well as to help the piston rings set.

In all actuality that could be a high-performance motor that died because they no longer put lead in gas that engine needed lead and its gas for lubrication on copper or brass seats
