It's very weird to me that they consider the Ace Attorney games not to be VNs but they're just fine calling the Zero Escape and Danganronpa games VNs. It feels almost like the whole point is just to turn their noses up at people who like the series.

There are no better alternatives sadly. I wish it was more like EGS, because there are a lot of games that are at least 50% VNs, but vndb doesnt include it as such, because "text only" and at the same time they make exceptions. The biggest cringe about their site is when you see discussion posts for some removed games, where these ppl count words and letters to make their "arguement" legit. I'd even argue some RPGMaker games are VNs, they are on EGS and even Fairy Fencer F and persona should count as a VN-like

I'm of the opinion that it's an adventure game series through and through. A big reason that it's pegged as a VN is more of its anime artstyle than anything else.

This might be an unpopular opinion, but I think people get confused when VN fans say: VN elements ≠ VN
Yes, you can have VN hybrids, but in this case, the VN portions need to be carrying the story. Ace Attorney doesn’t really fit into that, as the trials carry the most weight in the plot.
However, I would argue that a game like Corpse Party does fit into being a visual novel hybrid, as the gameplay just serves as a way to make the player feel more active in the overall plot.
I’m not mad that VNDB has AA on their site, but I do think the disclaimer is necessary.

The exceptions that are allowed explicitly are rare. Ace Attorney absolutely makes sense to keep, even if it isn't a VN. Those who are not all that knowledgeable about VNs always call it one. Any person who has ever heard of the medium, even in passing, is either told it is a VN or thinks it is a VN. It's only people who know a lot about the medium, such as myself, who know it is not. If they did not include the Ace Attorney franchise, there would be COUNTLESS attempts from new people to add it, constant arguments, and such. I think it is worth it for the franchise to stay.
