These cookies need to come with a warning. You're probably going to eat them within a day. I recently bought a bag of very similar cookies from an Afghan Bakery and it flooded me with nostalgia. It always surprises me how many countries share similar foods that you thought were native to your homeland. Enjoy!
Some of you have asked me about the hardest part of making videos. Honestly, it can be really nice to create a video without having to talk over it sometimes, because it saves me a lot of extra work. It also takes away the heaviness of being subjected to unnecessary judgement (obv not from you guys, you're the sweetest 🫶). And even though I've come to realize that I have a thicker skin than I thought, this week is my week off to just be in complete peace 🦭💛
Fried Cookies (žagarėliai)
Makes about 20
Ingredients:
1 egg
100g sour cream/crème fraîche
30g sugar
1 tsp vanilla
1 tbsp oil
1 tbsp vodka (optional)
1 tsp baking soda
250g flour
1 l oil
Instructions:
1. Mix the wet ingredients with sugar in a big bowl until smooth.
2. Add the flour and baking soda and knead into a smooth dough. It might be a little wet, but keep kneading.
3. Wrap the dough in plastic wrap and rest for 10 minutes.
4. Roll out the dough to 1 cm thick and cut into even squares. Cut a line in the middle of each square (not all the way through). Take one end and twist it through the hole.
5. Heat oil in a shallow pot. To test if it's ready, put in a wooden skewer; it should bubble around the sides. Or, carefully throw in a small piece of dough, if it doesn't come to the surface within seconds, it's not ready. Each side of the cookie should take a couple of minutes to f
