That's the way it is in China. In fact, I understand that it is still appropriate to view a bride as the daughter-in-law who is to be treated as nothing more than a slave to the husband's family. Complete with mental, emotional, financial, and physical abuse. Not everyone, of course, but it is tradition. Very sad.
I also understand that some countries like Japan are making some decent strides in eradicating that way of thinking but it is difficult with the older set.

In my culture, the "shotgun" seat is also called the dead seat as in accidents you're prone to injury in that seat.
My grandma used to book it to that seat and make my mom sit in the back in her own car. Once my mom got fed up and said "well, if you want the dead seat so much, be my guest". It ended there.
This happened before gps was a thing so my mom used to help my dad with directions and such which is much easier if you seat in thr front.

Sadly, this is not uncommon for this culture. The MIL also had a terrible MIL who did the same things to her: belittled her, demeaned her, made her subservient and demanded respectâŚ. complaining loudly to everyone if she didnât get what she expected. MIL has been waiting her whole life to assume the role of #1. Itâll take at least one more (possibly two) generation to completely dilute that convoluted thinking.

Oh, this brings back a memory from my teenage years! Weâd just moved to a country in Southeast Asia (we moved around a lot because of my fatherâs job) and taxis were the main mode of transportation after the bus. We were told by the local family that took us under their wing NEVER to sit in the front passenger seat. Better to all squeeze in the back seat, or the driver would disrespect you and try even harder to pull one over you.
Apparently, itâs a cultural thing.
That being said, if MIL was told that in the US/Canada riding shotgun is the privileged spot only second to the driver, she should have listened and at least tried to understand it actually was an honour to be given that seat.

I always assumed the driver was the number #1 and whoever sits shotgun is usually the favorite of the driver... And then everyone else was just...whatever. exceptions were kids and the elderly because they generally always sit in the back but only because of age. Never heard of this ranking system before, but I'm not mandarin.

The Queen of England was a mechanic in WW2. Her seat is the driver seat. Lol
