When learning how to negotiate a decent pay rise don't listen to bosses' advice

So basically he only enters negotiations when the other party has no leverage.

Yeah, I did that "Here is what value I add, etc." for six months, pointing out that I was 20% below average industry salary for my position. Got polite nods of the head and nothing more. Found another job, told them, and within an hour was offered a $10k retention bonus and 10% raise to stay. Was pleased to tell my manager that their sudden offer didn't even match the signing bonus at my new job and even with the 10% bump was still well below my new salary, in a lower cost of living area. Didn't need their lovely reference, I'd already got the new job offer.

Your biggest negotiating strategy is having the ability to walk away!

People use other jobs to negotiate because 99% of the time when a raise is asked for theyre told fuck off, clueless

I had the latter conversation with my boss and was told there's no money

And this is why employers have such high turnover rates. They have readily available talent but refuse to foster or reward it.

Real life story here. I worked my butt off at a company for a number of years and I focused on continuing to grow my value within the organization. When another company reached out trying to recruit me to their organization, they offered me a decent pay raise. I went to my boss and asked for a meeting. I told him I enjoyed working there and it was fulfilling doing what I did. However, I said I was getting this offer, but that I would prefer to stay there and that I needed him to know what this other company was willing to pay me. I had increased my value at this company in such as way that he told me whatever they offered he would match it and he didn’t want me to leave. He walked out of that meeting and went straight to HR. By the next check I was making 25% more. Moral of the story, it will always be easier to ask for more when you bring more to the table.

“Hey I know you’re good at your job, and it will cost me more money to rehire/ retrain and lose efficiency…but because of my ego, I would like you to go”.

Makes business sense.

Just pay people what they're worth and all these situations disappear.

“…that’s such a good conversation to have” (because I can decline their request for a pay rise)

In most organisations, how many people are going to the CEO for that conversation? Usually it’s the line manager and they don’t take you seriously until there is another offer on the table

Wages in the UK suck, 3x your wage by moving to the USA and you can even 5x & 7x over time.

This is like a fox telling the hens how to fortify their fence. Hilarious.

Why did it take that person to tell you the value they’re adding.

You should have already been paying them their worth.

The trouble is , I know many people that have tried this approach and it simply doesn't work! The only time company's are willing to pay more is when you submit your resignation...
