I've been twice in the past 4 years, can confirm some locals arent overly warm towards tourists but rightfully so. Their land is being overtaken and it drives the cost of living up and you can tell it bothers some people, however with that being said Hawaiians are some of the most friendly and laid back people their is, ask them about local restaurants or things to do and they gladly help...and save you money

I’m so homesick for the Big Island. I lived in Hilo for 40 years. Went to Oahu to meet up with local friends. I was turning into a real local Hawaiian. My prayers are with those who lost everything in the Maui fire. Please help restore the Island. ❤❤❤❤

Bradda da worst was when some tourist told my daughter outside wailers can't you kids go play somewhere else we paid lots of money to come here on vacation. The kids all HS age was mad . The tourist moved on. No disrespect da locals!!

I’m heading to Maui in just a few days.. i was scrolling through tiktok and saw this girl pet a turtle on the beach… no matter where you go, DONT TOUCH THE WILDLIFE.
We also bought reef safe sunscreen! We are big salt water enthusiasts and understand the importance of protecting the reefs and wildlife. I’ve been doing a lot of research on how to be respectful to your culture and land ❤

Does anyone know that Waikiki beach is man made? No? Yeah it used to be a swamp, and ala Moana beach used to be mud flats. and they import sand from California to keep the beaches from naturally eroding away.. you're welcome.

I’m seen many comments of people saying where the bad ones let me ask you something why do we act like this maybe from pass experiences maybe because tourists vandalize break property disrespect locals act as if they know everything don’t know your guys boundaries and you expect us to be on our best behavior when we come no most of you don’t have any respect when you come where we were born and raised so stop acting like this is all our fault this is our home not yours you may be welcomed but it doesn’t mean you can do whatever you like respect the locals respect property’s and respect the life I’m not saying all tourists are like this but I will say most of them are.

People need to be respectful, after all you are a guest in the islands. When I come to the islands , I kick back and enjoy the beauty .And in no hurry to do anything. We even went to the animal shelter and played with the cats , cause we missed ours and of course made a donation to help them out .

As a white person whos lived on the big island for a couple years now, locals can be some of the most racist and prejudiced people in the US you'll ever meet in your entire life. And they're proud of it too. Just keep that in mind when you decide to vacation here, don't expect hospitality.
That being said, There's plenty of almost overly hospitable people here as well. Try to make some connections even small ones, It can take a while for some to warm up to you but its worth it in the end.

Went to Kauai a while back. Awesome place. Beautiful garden island. Beaches were amazing. Enjoyed the island and chilled with friends. Always treat people with respect and kindness.
