I do think any elected official should have to get a security clearance before they can be sworn in. These are the people who vote for the laws, so they should have extra requirements.

As an American, i hear this and immediately think that not everyone can afford a 4year degree. Also, politicians dont have to write essays as part of their job, why would it then be logical to make it apart of their job requirements. Reminds me of all the desk jobs that require a person to be able to lift 40lbs (or whatever is considered heavy).

When you elect nothing but lawyers....all of a sudden laws are circumvented.

this is kinda similar to what is happening in Canada. All of our federal politicians have to speak french and english fluently. but french education programs are very very poor for the majority of the country (and visa versa for english in the majority french parts) this leads to a very small amount of rich people from a very small area of the country overwhelmingly dominating politics and senior government jobs. we call it the laurentian elite.

We should have politicians that actually represent there constituents. The most average ever man from an area

I'm on the fence with this. Most educated politicians look out for the poor and uneducated. But when I look at Doug Ford who's total post secondary education is one week in a community college, I think, shouldn't we elected based on people who seek knowledge and not those who avoid it?

Would that reduce the number of sask party MLAs?

At least give them a pop quiz on our history, laws, and political apparatus. Oh, and a lie detector test for one question: are you a grifter? ;-)

I do think there should be a basic quiz/test about how government works (the role of the courts, the role of parliament, federal vs provincial powers, etc)

On the other hand, "rule by people with university degrees" might not work out the way some Cons I've heard might expect.

Disagree, we have politicians with no credentials making decisions for people with credentials. It’s hard to work with someone uneducated who doesn’t understand. It takes alot of exhaustion to work with those people making bad decisions. If employees need schooling so should politicians. I’m done with crappy politicians who rake in money with no accountability

Or what about electing a woman who was taught our politics at her mother's knee? Like, say... (slowly raising hand)? I could be talked into voting for someone like me. Easily.

I think the commenter is looking for some kind of political training or certification, before people are eligible to get political power. The same way you need a license to drive. If you don't understand how government works, I don't think you'll make an effective politician.

In my opinion, this course should be free, and available to all.

There should be some qualifications needed for sure. That in itself can be a lengthy conversation but I can't help but think of americans right now. How the heck does a person such as donald trump be allowed/qualified to run for president?

You’re correct here of course, Steve, but you certainly MUST agree to IQ tests to have cable TV installed at someone’s home!? 😂

I’m not sure I agree with you. I am friends with several tradesmen. They are great guys to have a beer with.some are great , long term friends I like a lot.Politically and intellectually… not one. Literally not one. There was a time when uneducated people naturaldidn’t participate in politics. Then came the internet. I see your point but I’ve witnessed mass incompetence on a level that has shocked me.

Could we ask that people have to pass some type of critical thinking test before becoming a politician?

Am I wrong, or does a politician now have to be bilingual? Are they not required to speak English and French? Just a question.
