Queen talks Abt that exactly in their early years... They were barely eating while the managers and Record Label execs drive Rolls Royce's

I’ve played & recorded for some 40 yrs now. I love it. That’s why. I never had any illusion of becoming famous . I was just grateful to be playing for $$ , and making people forget their problems for a while.
I’m a musician. That’s just how I’m wired.
Still love it.

Despite all my rage I'm still just a rat in a cage... Knowing others felt that sometimes is the only way I make it thru

I realized the music industry isn't too put out great artists.. It's to control the ones that might blow up without having to pay them so they keep most the money and the rights

25+ years in and got screwed so many times I just went back to my home studio and now doing it for myself and anyone else who may give a fck. Record companies and their ARs should be dragged into the streets and sht on.

The big thing labels do is they stipulate that you wont see any royalties on an albums sales until theyve been paid back for the studio time, distro, advertising, etc. But right as your album approaches that number, the label will spend a bunch more money on advertising, even of its a decade later, and keep you never earning royalties.

Records labels will literally sign artists they view as competition just so they can shelf them, as a means to stifle the competition.

Van Halen made a platinum album & finished a tour and were told they owed the record company over a million dollars.

I was a writer for what was a big Publication in the 90’s. I got to go to parties, backstage, interview Artists. Saw the dark happening and it is sad. I got away

The power is shifting to the artists hands.

You used to need label backing to record because it was a crazy expensive process, now anyone with a laptop and some software (it’s not cheap but compared to analog recording it is Pennies) can get good sound quality.

Used to need to be on a label to get in a record store, anyone can put music on Spotify for 20$ (per year not song)

The biggest thing now is artists can hire independent manger and publicist that work for the artist not a label

It is definitely much slower than signing but it has more longevity and the artist typically sees more $ because they keep a majority of the income vs getting a minimal percentage from a label

This is why Prince created his own Music Master Recordings with his own Time , Money , and Studio . He could dictate what percentage of Money he would get off of each Album he sold and dictate what terms in a Record Contract he wanted because of it . 🔥💥🙉
