Florent Schmitt was among the most eminent French composers of the early 20th century. His best-known work remains La tragédie de Salomé, a ballet based on a version of the biblical story by poet Robert d’Humières. Unlike in Oscar Wilde’s famous retelling taken up by Richard Strauss, Humières’ Salomé is portrayed as essentially innocent and is stricken with horror by the execution of John the Baptist. The Ballet’s setting of King Herod’s terrace overlooking the Dead Sea figures prominently in Schmitt’s exotic scoring.
