When they were lighting the Helm's Deep scene, someone came up to Peter Jackson and asked where all the light was coming from. That man looked them dead in the face and said "The moon".
Legend.

It is ridiculous to focus on realism when it comes to lighting and vision quality in movies. People might as well be asking if it is realistic to have cameras filming the scene.

What's the phrase I keep seeing 'the light comes from the same place as the music' or something similar

This is why i consider lotr and pacific rim to be the gold standard for filming scenes at night/in the dark.

I wish more filmmakers let us just see the scene,

"Oh, but I want the lighting to be diegetic"

Then actual put enough light sources in your scene dammit

My gripe with the blue filter method is that, when poorly executed, it's so obviously shot during the day. I've seen scenes that must have been shot around noon, with every actor's shadow clearly visible and white cumulus clouds in a blue sky.

Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood has an interesting example of this, where several fights occur in what is clearly indicated to be pitch-black darkness, but the screen is lightened enough that you can see what's going on, just enough that it's dim like the latter end of twilight.

It’s a movie. Don’t make it realistic, make it convincing .

Same problem with, like, 90% of DC's attempts at an MCU. So many films with janky, dark attempts at mood. It's not moody, it's just dark and we can't see shit!

"We can't see shit!"
"Yes you can. It's season six of GoT."

Actually, Helm's Deep was shot in the glowworm caverns at Waitomo, which I visited when I went to New Zealand in 2005. That was one of the few times in history that the country has allowed non-natural light into those caverns; when I took the boat tour, we were instructed to put our cell phones away, and it was very strictly enforced, because the glowworms get spooked by outside lighting. Apparently the production team paid quite well to shoot in those caverns! I also visited the Aranui Caverns at Waitomo, which is not as strict about cell phones, though they want to keep outside lighting to a minimum to avoid discoloring the stactites and stalagmites. Anyway, it doesn't matter what time of day they shot those scenes because in those caves the lighting is fairly constant.

My favorite movie example of putting a lense filter over daytime footage is Plan 9 from Outerspace. Many, many scenes of characters driving up and down the exact same road. Sometimes it's dark, sometimes it's daytime because the film crew forgot to put the lense filter on the camera.

I recently watched all the lord of the rings and harry potter films with my cousins and something I noticed was how good the night scenes are. Like you can tell it's night (not colour filter over daylight), still see everything but there's an atmosphere there. And I think one of the biggest aspects of that is that they lit it but they weren't afraid to the the shadows be truly pitch black like they would be.

Ah, the despised Season 8, where D&D gave up to go work on Solo.

Yup, "years of fan anticipation wasted!"

I will gladly shit on GoT Season 8 and the Long Night, but I do think the use of Darkness with the Dothraki charge actually does kind of work since you can still their burning weapons in the dark only for them to be snuffed out.

You mention blue-filter night and I immediately think of the Mystery Science Theater 3000 B-movie Werewolf. Hopefully more than one person knows what I’m talking about.

God, so much this, I've made this argument so often recently. Just let us see what's going on!
A recent film I'd level it at is The Batman, which has what I'm told is a great car chase scene in it. I'm not such a big fan of it, because I could barely see what was going on when I saw it.

The suspension of disbelief is needed in order to watch a movie or show. Otherwise, you'll find endless plot holes to complain about
