Do you want your dog’s recall to be as good as Sunshine’s?

Well here are a couple of tips on how I teach a dog recall 👇🏼

First of all every dog is different and is motivated by different things. Sunshine is very food motivated so she learned that every time she came to me she got rewarded with treats.

Using treats is a great way to start! But you do want to eventually wean off of them and replace with other things like touch or verbal praise

Start on leash! Your dog won’t know what you are asking them to do. So using the leash to guide them back to you is a great way to start introducing the behavior pattern. (He calls my name, I go to him, I eat yummy treat, positive experience learned)

NEVER recall your dog to scold them! That defeats the purpose of having them willingly come back to you.

Wait until they are distracted to call them. This is excellent “real world” practice

Gradually increase the distance. You can use a long line leash to practice this.

Find a large enclosed space to start practicing this “off leash”, but let them drag the long line at first. That way you are there to follow through on your recall command if they don’t follow.

Work your way up to using a large enclosed area to practice with no leash.
