John Fogg is the featured speaker in this video and is a former pilot for the U.S. Navy Blue Angels. The incident he is referring to happened in March of 1973 during Blue Angels winter training while practicing the "trail loop formation".

My boy Scout leader was a F4 pilot in Vietnam. I knew he was a pilot when I was young because he took us for flights in his Beechcraft and about 10 years ago I had breakfast with him one day and he started telling me about him getting shot down. He got hit and the plane was still flying so he said that he full throttle was headed back to the carrier. He said that he had to punch out over the gulf of Tonkin at almost Mach 1. His back was always giving him trouble as long as I had known him. Thankfully he made it to the water and was picked up by his ship. He said he had similar injuries from his helmet but hearing your story I understand it much better. I didnā€™t want to push the story because after almost 40 years he finally told me that story. I never knew about him being a naval aviator flying fighter jets. I always assumed he flew a cargo plane since he didnā€™t tell us stories of flying supersonic jets. Someone waits 40 years before telling me his story thatā€™s why I donā€™t push for more. I didnā€™t want to bring up bad memories.

John, I don't know if you read the comments but complements on your work with the Corps and the Blues. I flew the F-4 down at Chu Lai for Petersen's 314 squadron.
I was in 531 with Murph at Cherry Point back in '67,'68
and knew him quite well.
Somehow I missed you in the community, you must have been a little later, '69
or so. Lots to talk about if you have the time.
Well Done, old man. S/F

Foggy, Glad you got out ok. Kinda glad I never had to pull the handle, especially at 450 knots.

My late brother Jim was the crew chief of an F4 phantom out of Corpus Christy, Texas, and on the Saratoga.

The Phantom is a fast, heavy, work horse. I accumulated many hours in it.

After his tour with the Blue Angels, John joined my squadron.VMFA 451. I was a new pilot. John was a great mentor to me. I remember him well.

Had no idea of his history...

You had better luck than the 5
Thunderbirds flying the T-38.
One control stick jammed and all followed into the ground.

Ah yes, a flame out in an F-4. Happens now and then just when you don't want it.

It could have been an engine issue that broke the pitch control system
